SHAP Notes

SHAP is Mark Spybeys third cd release as Dead Voices On Air. He is known for his work with English tribal-ethnicists Zoviet-France and the ground breaking ex-Skinny Puppy project DOWNLOAD. He is also part of the SPASM project for Invisible Records.

SHAP is Mark Spybey at his most sombre. He writes. " when i started to record this album I wanted to concentrate on the use of my voice. I set about recording a series of improvisations based around pantheistic themes. I was influenced by inspirational choral music from a variety of cultures. I also began to explore the use of the old- English language that later was to become a critical feature of the Download album, "Furnace."

SHAP sees Mark Spybey build on from his previous album for Invisible records, "Hafted Maul." He states feeling somewhat ambivalent about the current use of the term "dark ambient" to describe his music. " it is a meaningless term. Somewhat derisory. The single most striking feature that differentiates between exciting and dull music in my opinion is it's ability to engage the listener in a dynamic internal intercourse. To acknowledge ones strengths and limitations.

To accept the dangers intrinsic to music. If people find my music to be disturbing, then that is fine by me. It is never something that I consciously set out to achieve but if it happens as a side product, then fine. As long as one realises that we all have demons within and that we are all capable of accessing these.

SHAP is named after a small town in the North of England. It features Zev Asher of Roughage and Nimrod infamy giving an explanation for the meaning of the title, "Hafted maul." It features contributions by Martin Atkins of Pigface, Curse Mackey of the Evil Mothers and was engineered in Chicago by Julian Herzfeld. The package was assembled by one of Spybey's close collaborators Clancy Dennehy (photography) and David Babbitt (graphic formatting and design). The sleeve features more of Spybeys original artwork. SHAP is nearly 70 minutes long and features 21tracks.

'
the phenomenon of complementary colours is well known if for instance, I see a red light and close my eyes, there's an after image (ocular spectrum) and that's green. Or, the other way round, if I look at a green light, then the after image is red...

So it's a matter of evoking a lucid world, a clear, a lucid, perhaps even a transcendental, a spiritual world through something which looks quite different, through an anti-image. Because you can't create an after-image or an anti-image by doing something which already exists, but only by doing something which is there as an anti-image, always in an anti-image process.

So it isn't right to say I'm interested in grey. That's not right. And I'm not interested in dirt either.I'm interested in a process which leads us away beyond those things."
-Joseph Beuys.
