Press Release, How Hollow Heart

Title: "HOW HOLLOW HEART" c.d.
Label: Invisible Records.
Released: January 21st, 1997.

The title of this album is culled from a Samuel Beckett poem. The quote reads," How hollow heart and full of filth thou art." Is this supposed to be some kind of signal ? As always, I am not going to answer questions literally. I found this quote because I was reading a book of Becketts poems. Found by accident. If it signifies anything it is belief in the power of the accident. Like the recording of this album.

I arranged some studio time with Gerald and invited Sheldon, whom I had never met. Gerald invited Chris and Heike. We set up some gear and played music over two consecutive evenings. Initially, we were intending to simply and mechanically capture some sounds. Sample them, manipulate and construct some pieces. That never happened. My painfully short studio attention span simply couldn't cope with that kind of approach. Instead, we played live infront of a handful of rotating friends camped out in the cramped studio. Everything was recorded dutifully to DAT. About seven hours or so. I left Toronto and promised to do some kind of assemblage, culling moments from the four DAT tapes. Instead, when I finally got around to doing this I decided against any kind of editing. I can hear mistakes. So what ? This " finished " product is a manifestation of those sessions and as such is worthy of documentation in it's entirety. " How hollow heart " therefore is part one of a series that will be released throughout 1997 in a variety of formats. It is a literal transcription to tape of those sessions. Two lengthy silences and one false start are all that has been cut from this cd. That is all.
