Press Releases Notes See the discography informations on this release Press release, James Plotkin:Mark Spybey Title: "A Peripheral Blur" Label: Kranky. debut cd: KRANK 032 Release:1998 The five pieces included on this release were made primarily through the use of processed electric guitars and acoustic instruments. During the summer of 1996 Mark Spybey was asked to play at the Anchorage Festival under the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. James Plotkin was invited to play with him and the two stuck up a partnership that has continued with the recording of A Peripheral Blur. The two musicians found that their interests were closely allied. Music that requires active participation by listeners. Music that seeks to utilize repetitive structures with occasional harmonic references. Plotkin's work was described by The Wire as "dronology with soul." Guitar magazine (whose editors named Plotkin as the most important experimental guitarist) stated that "..he often renders the guitar unrecognizable." Spybey's work has obvious similarities, but he utilizes a wide variety of unfamiliar instruments in his music: children's toys, ethnic stringed instruments, flutes and horns all processed and corrupted to the point of decay. Option magazine wrote of Spybey that "his knack for creating sonic intrigue from such a limited approach shows just how unimaginative most ambient music can be." The Wire said of the CD Oro, which was released under the name Propeller, that "...for all the different moods compacted in it's brief pieces, Oro is an intriguing return to the fold by Mark Spybey, former outlaw with Zoviet France." Central to Spybey's and Plotkin's collective approach is their preference for improvisation. They are both enthusiastic collaborators with a wide variety of people. Both have preferentially abandoned the need to orchestrate live concerts preferring to play unrehearsed and raw, often meeting "band" members for the first time on stage. Plotkin toured with noted improvisers Ikue Mori and Kato Hideka as a part of Death Ambient, recording artists on John Zorn's Tzadik label. A Peripheral Blur was created through the recording of first take improvisations which were carefully arranged by the duo. Spybey sent tapes of his work to Plotkin, who added to and then remixed the composites to reveal a whole which the duo feel is indicative of their current concerns. James Plotkin and Mark Spybey will play together on a North American tour featuring Can legends Damo Suzuki and Michael Karoli between September 25 and October 5, 1998. Track Listing: 1.
