Improvisation five unforgetable improvisations 4) THIS HEAT: THIS HEAT-1978. Piano Records. Subsequently re-issued on cd by These Records, I believe. This Heat were from South London. A trio of Charles Hayward, Charles Bullen and Gareth Williams, they recorded two albums and a classic e.p. 'Health and Efficiency' before anonymously disbanding in about 1980. At least two posthumous releases have appeared from this trio who have never reformed. This Heat is their debut album and was originally released on David Cunninghams (of Flying Lizards fame) Piano label. It is a stunning collection of edited material from improvisations. It traverses ridges held together by deathly quiet industrial sounding noises and monstrous guitar, drum and bass riffs and loops. In it's more angry moments it makes Napalm Death sound like the Ramones. Cartoon imitators. Like the Faust Tapes however,it flows into curious song structures, held together by Haywards Robert Wyatt-like voice. It is a mixed bag, containing elements of avant-rock (long since heralded by luminaries such as Chris Cutler, of Henry Cow and Recommended Records fame), gristle-esque noise-scapes and packed together with an intensity characterised by musicians who are clearly unafraid of an audiences response. With titles like..Music Like Escaping Gas and the Fall of Saigon, this eleven track album is cold, alienating and harsh. You see, some bands don't have to show grisly movies, some bands do not have to try to be scary to convey important and powerful feelings. 18 years later, there are many parts of this record that make no sense to me at all. Perhaps that is truly the sign of great music. |
